Culture Spotlight Featuring Ira Descendent

Ira 'Descendent' Bond is a champion of black culture, at home and abroad. Through songwriting and filmmaking, the Bronx-based MC seeks to illuminate and celebrate the cultural strength of the Pan-African diaspora, specifically of African American art. Starting from his hometown of Newport News, Virginia, he dives into the roots of African American storytelling: music and oral history. They become his vehicle to not only remember the history of his ancestors but also connect with the communities around him.

Tell us about your experience at the Hip Hop Film Festival. As an artist and filmmaker, I found the Hip Hop Film Festival to be one of the best experiences of my career. From meeting other filmmakers, actors, writers to being inspired by each film that I watched at the Apollo, I was honored that my film was a part of greatness in Hip Hop culture. I was completely blown away by the entire week.

Why are “stories from the culture” worthy of a platform? Because stories of our culture are not told in their entirety. Our experiences are more extensive than what Hollywood is currently presenting. My belief is that the platform represents a balance that is crucial for the transition from small to big screens.

Why do you think the Harlem Film House and Hip Hop Film Festival are important? Both platforms are vital because they consistently amplify voices that may not be able to cut through the noise of the status quo. The opportunities granted to filmmakers like myself by Harlem Film House and Hip Hop Film Festival are a testament to the value and desire for our creativity.

What projects are you working on now? I am working on promoting my newly released collaboration album "Convergence" with reggae artist Dupes from St Lucia. I have a live concert album that will come out towards the end of the year. I am writing another script for my next full featured film "Losing My Way" which will go along with my new solo album coming very soon.
